Comment on WTO Woes by Mark

The WTO regularly rules against the USA for protectionist actions such as antidumping duties arbitrarily applied. The typical U.S. reaction is to ignore the ruling as if it never happened. Here are a couple of examples;

http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-01-18/wto-rules-against-u-s-duty-calculation-method-backing-korea.html

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/19/business/global/19trade.html

http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/7b00c4a0-7b89-11dc-8c53-0000779fd2ac.html#axzz1T4YAgDOz

Alternatively, the USA simply announces that it won the dispute, and carries on as if that were the case. Is the United States in danger of being kicked out of the WTO? Ha, ha - as if. But it might explain why Russia probably sees the accusation that it does not display "willingness to comply to WTO rules when they do not seem to immediately benefit the country", considering it is not even a member and thus under no obligation to obey the rules, while longstanding members ignore the rules as and whereas it suits them. Insistence that Russia bind itself to WTO regulation before it is even considered for membership looks, in that light, more than a little hypocritical.

Car manufacturers in the USA may not call their vehicles "American-made" if the content of domestic parts is less than 75%, 15% higher than the Russian rule.

Putin is simply trying to protect the domestic auto industry, so it doesn't go under from a flood of competition originating in countries that pay their workers next to nothing - China is just a hop away, and is the manufacturing/fabrication king of the world. It has nothing to do with "putting liberalization on hold".
